The Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) hosted its annual refuse, recycling, street scene, grounds and parks seminar, providing delegates with the latest up to date service ideas and improvements and honoring innovative, sustainable efforts from local councils.
The Newcastle City Council was awarded the 2019 APSE Waste and Recycling Innovation Award and named a finalist for the 2019 APSE Street Scene Innovation Award for its Enevo smart city litter bin solution. Utilising Enevo world-leading technology, the city was able to operate its waste services in the most sustainable and cost-efficient manner, reducing resources by 50%.
Newcastle employed Enevo's patented waste sensor and analytics software to service its public litter bins. Enevo sensors measure fill levels while its analytics software monitors and predicts waste behaviour, creating a customized collection schedule for each location.
The smart waste system prevents overflow, eliminates unnecessary collections, and creates the most efficient route between sites in need.
By operating its waste services in the most productive manner, Enevo tech created a 50% reduction in resource and a 51% reduction in community complaints in Newcastle, along with an overall decrease in carbon emissions, noise, traffic, and litter.
Across countries, more than 90% think it’s important to live in a sustainable city (WWF) — Newcastle took the initiative, using Enevo technology to create a greener, cleaner, less disruptive, and more economic solution for its community.
