When a full-service construction and management firm needed an upgrade to their waste services and more information in their LEED reporting, Enevo utilized its technology to create both.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world, providing the framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement.
To maintain certification, the client must submit quarterly reporting on their green efforts, including their waste services.
The client (who would like to remain anonymous) was receiving regular reports from their previous waste provider on their general waste production and recycling diversion rates. The reports provided consisted only of “estimated industry averages for volumes based on container size”. For the first quarter of 2019, the previous provider gave the same numbers each month, with no real insight into their actual waste and recycling production.
Inaccurate data and misinformed reporting risked their accreditation, while unreliable insight skewed focus on their waste efforts.
Enevo stepped in with its industry-leading technology to create better waste services and provide more insight.
Our sensor is constantly measuring dumpster fill levels, while our analytics software studies and predicts waste behavior, records waste generation and collections, and reports in near real-time. This allows us to create custom waste services based on actual waste production, not estimates. When we only make the collections our clients need, we decrease costs and increase efficiency – we’re also able to run our trucks in the most eco-friendly manner possible, utilize insights to increase recycling diversion rates, and create advanced, informed waste programs to further boost sustainability.
Using our technology, we were able to provide more accurate data through our proprietary sensor readings for each location, per month by content type, on a quarterly basis. Our first quarterly report showed a discrepancy between the “estimated industry averages” reported by the previous waste provider and Enevo’s actual volume readings.
One location estimated a 34% recycling diversion rate, the percentage of total waste diverted away from the landfill and towards specialized recycling collection centers. Enevo sensor data showed, in reality, they were diverting 54% of their waste away from the landfill.
Additionally, total waste generation estimates were incorrect. Enevo data revealed that the previous waste provider had overestimated waste generation, by nearly double. The client’s actual generation was, on average, 48% of the original estimates.
Their true sustainability was greater than the “estimated industry averages,” and Enevo was able to properly showcase just how effective their green practices were.
Transparent data and accurate insight on their actual waste production has allowed our customer to focus their efforts and adjust practices accordingly, all while safely securing their LEED certification with confidence.
